The American Dream Is StrongPosted on August 01, 2016
It's 6:45 am on a Friday and I find myself walking to Peets Coffee with my bestie and my husband.
Best. Morning. Ever.
This is not a typical coffee rendezvous for me and her but we make whatever hour of the day work. As we parted ways with Brad who was on his way to work (but may or may not have stopped at the local Pokemon gym?! I don't even know...), we ordered our coffees, indulged in our scones and the chatter began.
And then she said it, a statement I haven't stopped thinking about.
The American dream is strong.
At this moment in life, the end goals are:
- Pay off student loans
- Start career
- Buy a house
- Have kids
I haven't even reached 30 yet, and I'm already asking, is this all there is to life?
Before we go any further into a downward spiral, God reminds me of those moments of really living.
[The exhilaration of being asked to go on a short term trip and blowing off school to REALLY go.]
[The vulnerability of inviting absolute strangers over and then having your house overflow with new neighborhood friends, because they CAME!]
[Hopping on the motorbike with Brad and weaving in and out of stuffy, loud traffic.]
[Watching a baby come into the world on Christmas Eve in a little clinic on Cabreros St.]
[Volunteering yourself to film your friends' wedding when you've never filmed one before.]
How quickly I forget these moments as the American dream chokes the life out of us.
There is nothing wrong with wanting a house or wanting to start a family but why do we become content with only that? It's as if we have a huge ice cream sundae in front of us, we lick the whipped cream, even eat the cherry on top but stop as soon as the spoon hits the ice cream.
Guard Your Heart From The American Dream
We're in a battle to truly live the life God intended for us. As Pinterest and Apple products dictate how we should live, the truths of God's word are screaming quite the opposite.
"Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." Matthew 10:39
Just when you think life is not going according to your plan and you end up letting go of all plans and all dreams then you make room for the much better plans God has in store.
"But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth." Exodus 9:16
Fight for a life of purpose and not just simply living in this world. And if you don't know where to start, I know of a nonprofit that could use a whole lotta help :)
